Small size Woodblock print series

Traditional and high quality woodcut prints (Ukiyo-e) in small size!

Even though it is small, it is made in accordance with traditional techniques that continue from ukiyo-e, with sculptors and slasher's division of labor. The carving is carved up to an extremely delicate level equivalent to Ukiyoe.
As for the sliding, we perform multicolor rubbing similar to Ukiyo-e, we finish by 10-15 times overlapping rail.
It is a completely handcrafted traditional woodcut print that does not allow any compromise by craftsmen with advanced traditional techniques.
In addition, a special type of Washi, a handmade luxury Echizen Japanese paper was used, a "Raw Fiction Service" to maximize the beauty of woodcut prints.

Mt. Fuji 2020

1964 Tokyo Olympics movie

This year (2020), we have created a new woodcut to commemorate the 56th Olympic Games in Tokyo. It is not a direct artistic representation of the athlete's performance or imitating the Olympic logo, but an indirect artistic work that reminds of the Olympic Games from Japanese landscape paintings. Fuji was used as a typical Japanese landscape painting.

That one scene (about 9: 33 min at the movie)

One of the scenes from the 1964 Tokyo Olympics movie has a design that looks great. (Left figure) The torch runner running on the foot of Mt. Fuji, this scene was trimmed into an outline of the work. The details of the woodblock prints were drawn from Kawase Hasui's description of "Funatsu no Aki".

(Woodcut detail)

Based on these two pictures,
I made a composite image.
The part (red dashed line)
are customized and created
with reference to the originals.
This composite image is
the basic design.

However, there was a major problem with this basic design.
The problem was that the smoke at the foot of Fuji was not seen by the torch runner, but like a steam locomotive (SL).
So we tried to change the design to avoid the problem and improve it to the original picture.

Guardrail version

I added a guardrail to make it look like a torch runner is running.
However, this still failed to look like SL.
①:Guardrail
②:Small forest

Audience silhouette version

Instead of guardrails, we arranged some audience silhouettes.
I also added a flag waving silhouette. In addition, the small forests in the background have been removed to balance.
With this improvement, the problem that appears to be SL is almost solved.
③:Audience silhouette
④:Add national flag
⑤②:Small forest has been removed

Original picture

As a woodblock print, we clarified the design of each color plate and completed the original.
In particular on the mountain surface of Mt. Fuji, more colors than the number of boards can be expressed by the composite color of the boards.
(For details, see "How to make woodblock prints.") For titles, woodcuts are used for vertical writing, and stamps are used for horizontal writing in the small version.

⑦:Vertical title (woodcut)

Oasis 21 & TV tower

Contour lines and backgrounds are based on photo 1.
The color of the disc, etc. is based on photo 2
I made a design drawing based on the design.
With using traditional techniques, we then
made the woodcut.

The TV tower was the first integrated radio tower in Japan in Nagoya Sakae in 1953, and has long been a symbol of Nagoya. In 2002, near the southwest of the TV tower, Oasis 21 opened as a complex with public facilities such as bus terminals and parks and commercial facilities, and the scenery and lighting created by these facilities will become a new landmark in Nagoya and globally. It is also attracting attention. Although small in size, the oasis 21 and the steel frame of the TV tower are faithfully reproduced in traditional woodcuts from the details.

The Nagoya Castle

Nagoya castle was destroyed at the time of World War II and rebuilt in 1959 after the war. In 1937 before the war, the painter: Tsuchiya Mitsu (1870-1949) was drawing a woodcut print of Nagoya Castle.
Based on his drawing, some corrections were added, and the original design of Ukiyo woodcut was done again.
This work is the reprinted Nagoya castle as a woodcut print before it burned.

The Atsuta Shrine

The Atsuta Shrine is famous shrine dedicated to the Kusanagi sword (sword of the rustling) which is one of three kinds of sacred treasure.
In the beginning of year, I designed the "Ryugaku Shinto" which is done by calming the spirit of the earth and wishing for mischief and invitation.
It is an original work of Ukiyo woodcut, which trimmed the pictures of ryugaku priests and designed them into woodcut prints.
It is an innovative work that pioneered a new process of making traditional woodcut prints based on photographs.

Juman-Tsubo Plain at Susaki, Fukagawa

The original picture is the famous "Juman-Tsubo Plain at Susaki, Fukagawa" of Utagawa Hiroshige.
We trimmed part of it in equal magnification, and redesigned it with some correction. By making trimming and correction, I made it a more modern image.
This design also includes a new concept of cutting out a part of Ukiyoe prints and offering it at a reasonable price.
